What is Move exactly?

For the philosopher, for the dreamer, for someone who enjoys being provoked to deep interpretation and thought, digesting significance and meanings, for someone who enjoys realistic work. This is quite a heavy novel / story of mine. It is a semi-autobiographical philosophical realistic portrait, journey of a struggling musician. Semi-autobiographical project that I’ve been wanting to tackle for years, and it contains or will contain much of my philosophies, thoughts, emotions, ideas and onwards as a dreamer and musician at heart, as well as fragments and aspects of my actual day to day life. It delves into the human psyche and refers and is influenced at different times to literary or philosophical greats.

Here are spoilers about what I think I’m writing… but readers are free to interpret different ideas and themes:

In my work, I’m always trying to present some sort of theme and message to people. Of course, there’s that inescapable theme of chasing a dream that seems impossible and all the insecurities, inner conflicts that arises from that. That I think we all go through, because we as human beings are very complex, we don’t really think in a straight line but rather have all kinds of doubts and questions and worries but at the same time optimism and hopes for things, we want or etc. whether it is a relationship or dreams in life. Taking “After Dark” as an example, Murakami likes to use characters that never know why they’re doing something, I feel. Like what I’m doing with Move kind of, people the way they are just the way they are, and they’re in this constant cycle. In Taka’s case, a state of contradiction and unmoving/indecisiveness/dream-doubt/unsuccessful-ness, as with other characters. It takes on a symbolic and deeper significance when its like that i think. it’s something that shows the uncontrollable part of the human existence, a part of the human psyche that we cannot understand, just something built in to that person. a hell or something he can’t escape from. like Edgar Allan Poe’s themes in his creepy haunting gothic stories. It shows an aspect of the human nature. However, while there is a descent into madness in Poe and such work, and the neutral staticism in Murakami and some of my other favourite works, i’m going to try to create a potential hope for ascent through character development to “heaven” and epiphany, whether it literally happens or not.

On the other hand, there is my outlook on the world, society and the system; how people are trained and fall into line as machines. So there is the theme of the escape from the cage, from the mundane and the static system that we exist in, whether it is actually possible to escape or do we have to succumb to it eventually? That theme reminds me of a number of great writers and similar things to what is in Fight Club as well. It is actually a very prominent and common theme in the arts world of society nowadays as we do see this. Yet too much of the time, people still are unaware. I try to present these themes as blatantly and as potently as possible in Move.

Within the characters themselves, they are perhaps representations of myself or archetypes of people that exist in the world around us. There is the balance between Taka and his relations with other characters, in his indecision once again how that affects interaction. Each character in the future will also be clearly etched out eventually, so that you will see how Kanade is the direct opposite of Tomomi. And in that, the themes of Socratic love and Platonic hierarchies will be explored.

Perhaps there is much more in what I’m attempting to take on, like the affect of music, and what struggles music itself brings. Perhaps the innate inescapable need for companionship. Reality being undeniably true. The question of what is reality. and onwards.

I hope this will be a fascinating book for readers to soak in.
